User Information

Before using KAI Hand, carefully read the following safety instructions to ensure safe operation of the device and protect personnel from injury.

Safety Precautions

  • KAI Hand requires a 12 V DC power supply. The supplied 12 V, 20 A power adapter is recommended.
  • Before powering on, inspect the power harness for damage, check that all connectors are secure, and verify that the positive and negative terminals are correctly connected.
  • Do not connect or disconnect the XT30 connector while powered. In an emergency, disconnect the power adapter from the mains.
  • During operation, relative motion occurs at the joint linkages. Keep hands and other body parts clear of pinch points during interaction.
  • KAI Hand provides unidirectional passive compliance, but this does not protect against all types of collision. Avoid unnecessary impacts during operation.
  • KAI Hand is compliant in one direction only (see Joint Definitions). Do not force the fingers in non-compliant directions, as this may damage the joint modules or sensors.
  • Before modifying the default motion parameters, verify their effects in simulation whenever possible to avoid unexpected motion on the physical device.
  • Avoid handling fragile or flammable objects whenever possible. Prevent excessive compression, abrasion, or other damage to the sensors and wiring harnesses.
  • When disconnecting the CAN cable, pull gently to avoid damaging the connector solder joints.
  • KAI Hand is rated IP20. Keep the device away from liquids, oil mist, and dust, and prevent contaminants from entering the enclosure.
  • Keep magnetic objects away from each finger-joint area to prevent interference with the joint magnetic encoders.

Recommended Operating Procedure

  1. Following the integration guide, connect the power and communication cables to KAI Hand and mount it on the commissioning base or the user’s own equipment.
  2. Power on KAI Hand. For the first startup, use the supplied power adapter. Confirm that the status indicators show the device is in standby.
  3. Establish the communication link. For the first connection, the official host-computer application is recommended. Check the device status through feedback data or the status indicators.
  4. Perform the zeroing procedure for the joints and sensors. Confirm the zeroing result using finger position feedback or the status indicators.
  5. Control KAI Hand through the host-computer application or the ROS 2 examples. For teleoperation, refer to KAI Hand Retargeting and KAI Hand Teleoperation.
  6. After operation, first close the host-computer application or ROS 2 example, and then power off KAI Hand.
